Park District hosting CNRA Secretary Wade Crowfoot & State Senator Nancy Skinner to Discuss Sudden Tree Die-Off

December 16, 2021

On Friday, December 17, 2021, the Park District is hosting California Natural Resources Agency Secretary Wade Crowfoot and State Senator Nancy Skinner for a site tour of two East Bay Regional Parks hit by the recent phenomenon of Sudden Tree Die-Off. Dead standing trees burn hotter, faster and can cast embers far ahead of the original fire, igniting potentially dangerous new fires. So far, the Park District has identified 1,500 acres of tree die-off in parks – caused by the extreme drought and changing climate – and removed 866 dead and dying trees to reduce wildfire risks.

Officials will discuss how Sudden Tree Die-Off is being addressed, as well as the types of activities that are continuing, even during the winter, to reduce wildfire risks in the Regional Parks. The site tour includes Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park and Anthony Chabot Regional Park.
