Tilden Regional Park Celebrating 85th Anniversary, Brazilian Room Celebrating 80th Anniversary With Public Event Sat., Sept. 25

The public is invited to join the East Bay Regional Park District and the Regional Parks Foundation for a unique day of honoring the anniversaries of two historic East Bay icons – the well-loved Tilden Regional Park and Brazilian Room event venue. Tilden Regional Park is turning 85 years old and the Brazilian Room 80 years old.
Tilden Regional Park is one of the Park District's three original parks and has been called the jewel of the East Bay Regional Park system. Its recreational activities have been a happy tradition for generations of East Bay youngsters and families. From train and carousel rides to picnics and swimming at Lake Anza or a stroll through Little Farm or the Botanic Garden, Tilden has a variety of activities that delight everyone. For over 85 years, Tilden's 2,079 acres of parklands have provided a place for enjoyment and inspiration, alive with nature and wildlife, and preserved into perpetuity.
Tilden was named for Charles Lee Tilden, first president of the Park District Board of Directors. The park is reached via Canon Drive, Shasta Road, or South Park Drive, all off Grizzly Peak Boulevard in Berkeley. The Brazilian Room derives its name from its rich hardwood paneling (Jacaranda, Imbuya, Brazilian Chestnut, and Mahogany) that was once part of the Brazilian Pavilion at the 1939 Golden Gate International Exhibition on Treasure Island that showcased the commerce and culture of the country of Brazil. When the exposition ended, the Brazil Building was presented to the newly-formed East Bay Regional Park District as a gift of friendship from the Brazilian government. True to its founders’ intentions, the Tilden Regional Park Brazilian Room has served as a beautiful scenic venue for community and family gatherings for 80 years.
Festivities will take place at both locations throughout the day, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Tilden Nature Area’s Environmental Education Center and 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Brazilian Room. The Regional Parks Foundation will be on-hand at the Environmental Education Center to engage with guests on gathering input and ideas on potential new designs and features for an upcoming Capital Campaign to renovate and improve the center.

With COVID safety precautions in mind, all activities, presentations, and food & beverage services will be held outside at both locations. Guests will be able to walk through to view exhibits inside the buildings, but gatherings are planned for outdoors. Masks are required.

The Park District receives more than 25 million visits annually throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties in the San Francisco Bay Area.
