Max Korten Hired as East Bay Regional Park District Deputy General Manager

September 11, 2024

The East Bay Regional Park District General Manager Sabrina Landreth announced today her hiring of Max Korten as Deputy General Manager. Korten joins the Executive Leadership Team as the Park District moves into its 91st year and prepares for a second century of conservation of open space for the people of Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

Korten, a 15-year East Bay resident, comes to the Park District after 10 years with Marin County Parks. Beginning as a parks and open space superintendent in 2014, he has been director and general manager since 2016, responsible for 34 open space preserves, 45 parks, and 150 employees. Prior to that he worked as the natural resources program director for Conservation Corps North Bay and as a backcountry ranger and trail crew supervisor for the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service. Korten graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a degree in Environmental Studies, and went on to obtain a Master of Science in Natural Resources from Humboldt State University. He also enjoys volunteering as a coach for his son’s soccer team and as a board member for Together Bay Area.

“After a very competitive nationwide search, I am so pleased to bring Max on board to help us continue the impressive growth we’ve experienced in recent years,” said Landreth. “Max’s breadth of knowledge and passion will bring new ideas in our efforts to provide open space, parks, trails, safe and healthful recreation and environmental education to our growing and diverse community.”

“I am really excited about serving my community through this role with East Bay Regional Parks,” said Korten. “East Bay Regional Parks have been a core part of my family’s life. My son learned to walk on the narrow, winding trails of the botanical garden in Tilden and learned to ride his bike at Point Pinole. I love watching the work of the EBRPD team: connecting the community to the natural environment, an exemplary approach to fire mitigation, key connections completed along the Bay Trail, commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, and the vision to turn quarries and other former industrial sites into beloved recreational and natural resource areas. I look forward to being part of this team.”

Korten’s first day with the Park District will be October 8, 2024.
