News: Alameda Beaches Sand Restoration Project Update Saturday Work Days Added

The project to pump 82,600 cubic yards of sand from offshore barges onto Crown Memorial State Beach and Alameda Beach will continue on Saturdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., as of October 26, in addition to weekdays.

The added work days are to meet the short critical path made necessary by regulatory permit constraints that limit in-water work to September 1 through November 30 construction window. Pumping sand from barges offshore minimizes truck traffic in the area, and the public can access the beach safely across sand fill or ramps over the pipeline seven days a week, with certain areas restricted as the work progresses from one end of the beach to the other.

This project to restore the beach and dune system to its 1987 footprint, at a cost of nearly $5.7 million, is to be completed by the end of the year.

Replacement of the sand is funded mainly by the East Bay Regional Park District, with additional funding from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), State Department of Boating and Waterways (DBAW); and Dubai Star oil spill mitigation funds.
