Join us in celebrating Black History Month

Join us in celebrating Black History Month in February as we honor the rich legacy of African American history in the parks by sharing stories of contributions of individuals and groups through our archives and naturalist programs. The Park District is committed to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, and making our agency welcoming and reflective of the communities we serve

To celebrate Presidents' Day and invite folks to enjoy their regional parks, Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve is offering the following tours free-of-charge and on a first-come, first-served basis on Monday, February 19th, 2024:

10-11:30am: Black Diamond Mines History Tour
Beneath these hills is a history of industry, innovation, and perseverance. Join us as we explore both eras of mining that occurred here in the 19th and 20th centuries. Participants will tour both the Coal Mine Experience and the Hazel Atlas Mine.

1-2pm: Hazel Atlas Mine Tour
Hard as rock, fragile as glass. In the early 20th century, the Hazel-Atlas Mine was a critical link in the process of creating glass. Discover the stories of the miners who removed the rock that once was an ancient seabed and is now part of your everyday life.

3-3:30pm: Coal Mine Experience Tour
In the late 19th century, people from around the world arrived here in search of a new life and new opportunities. Deep beneath the surface was a rock that would power the young state of California. Discover the toils, triumphs, and tragedies embedded in these hills as we explore a replica coal mine.
Please note that each tour is limited to 20 participants and all participants must be age 7 or older.

To register, please go to the Greathouse Visitor Center entrance: although the visitor center is closed, staff will be present 9:45am - 3:30pm to share information about the park and to register participants for tours. Day-of registration only.
