Treatment Trends

Vegetation management around structures, fences, walkways, and parking areas and along roads, bike paths, and trails comprise the bulk of herbicide use. Despite exponential growth in acreage, the Park District continues to reduce herbicide use.

Glyphosate-Free Parks

In July 2019, glyphosate use was removed from general use in developed areas in response to public concerns over its safety. Use of glyphosate has dropped 82% since 2016, when reduction was initiated. Park District staff now use a limited amount of glyphosate only outside of developed areas for noxious weed control to protect ecological function.

In another shift, park staff have changed the herbicides they use for fire safety and adjusted the timing of treatment to maximize effectiveness.  When chemical intervention is necessary, we use chemicals that are safest for the environment and the public.
