Tilden Environmental Education Center Update / Public Meeting

January 19, 2024

The East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) has begun the process of designing a replacement building for the Environmental Education Center (Tilden EEC) at the Tilden Nature Area. Built in the early 1970s, the Tilden EEC has served several generations and many thousands of visitors and parkgoers, but is in need of major structural and functional changes. After careful assessment, EBRPD has determined that building replacement, rather than rehabilitation, is required.

Specifically, the Tilden EEC project will:

  • Replace outdated utilities and address foundational and structural issues.
  • Provide 21st century educational and interpretive space for visitors and school children, including up-to-date interactive exhibits and learning resources.
  • Address and mitigate wildfire concerns in a wildfire-prone area of the Berkeley hills.
  • Better connect with the adjacent Tilden Little Farm and nearby trail systems.
  • Improve ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) access.

EBRPD is hosting the first in a series of informational meetings on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. where project architects, planners, and program managers will discuss and provide an overview of the Tilden EEC replacement project. Meeting Flyer
