The Briones Pilot Project is a two-year pilot project intended to test a variety of trail management strategies. The pilot project is limited to a portion of Briones Regional Park in the northeast corner of the park.
The Briones Pilot Project establishes specific rules limiting trail use within the project zone and for two trail segments adjacent to the zone, such as hiking only, biking only, or biking/hiking only and direction of travel. On weekends, trail use within the Pilot Project Zone will alternate days between bicycle and equestrian use based on even and odd calendar dates. A key component of the Project is the restoration of illegally built “bootleg" trails to protect natural habitat for wildlife.
The pilot project begins Friday, April 21, 2023. More Info.

Rangers, naturalists, wildlife volunteers, and students work together to create the Plover Protection Zone at Crown Beach | Snowy Plover Protection Zone at Crown Beach |
March is the beginning of breeding season for the tiny western snowy plover, listed as a federally threatened species and a California species of special concern.
Fortunately, there is a special Plover Protection Zone at Robert Crown Memorial State Beach in Alameda where they can safely fatten up on kelp flies, beach hoppers, other insects and small invertebrates that are washed up on the beach as they begin breeding.
Earlier this year, Park District staff and volunteers worked to establish this year's Plover Protection Zone by installing seasonal fencing and educational signage.
The overwintering plover population has increased tenfold at Crown Beach since the establishment of seasonal Plover Protection Zones!
