On Monday, August 25, East Bay Regional Park District staff will close the north-south trail at the Berkeley Meadow as part of the Phase II restoration project. The closure is for public safety during this restoration project.

The trail is slightly less than one-third of a mile and bisects the eastern and western parts of the Meadow. It will be closed on weekdays only and will be open holidays and weekends. The other trail through the Meadow will not be affected and perimeter trails will be open except for brief periods of time when trucks are entering the construction site. The trail should be re-opened by October 15.

The 13-acre Phase II project, when completed, will be an extension of the 17-acre Phase I. The overall restoration project includes restoring seasonal wetlands and creating coastal scrub and native grasslands. It provides good habitat for wildlife such as northern harriers, white-tailed kites, and western burrowing owls. About $1.7 million in funds and improvements have been provided by Bailey Estates LLC to construct this project. After Phase II is completed, a third and final phase of 37-acres is planned to restore the remaining portions of the Meadow. Download restoration project information.

The first phase of the program has been open to the public since 2005 and includes paths and interpretive panels.

The Berkeley Meadow, which is north of University Avenue between Frontage and Marina Boulevard, is part of Eastshore State Park
