The East Bay Regional Park District has joined a movement to encourage outdoor activity for kids throughout California called the California Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights. Created by the California Roundtable on Recreation, Parks and Tourism, this program addresses recent concerns about youth detachment from outdoor activities, lack of physical exercise, and increased health risks for children. The "bill of rights" lists 10 activities kids should experience by the time they turn 14 including exploring nature, discovering the past, following a trail, and learning how to swim. These outdoor adventures were typical a generation ago but are becoming increasingly challenging for today's youth.
The Park District offers programs, activities, and visitor centers geared toward children to encourage outdoor activity. Among those are six interpretive centers, a special Kid's Challenge program, age-specific hikes and nature activities, swim lessons, the Jr. Lifeguard program, summer camps, family campsites, horseback riding, boat rentals, and fishing equipment, along with many miles of trails for hiking, biking, and nature study.
