The intent of the Interpretive Student Aide program is to provide currently enrolled high school and college students with an excellent opportunity to work as a para-professional and to provide public information in a park visitor center and surrounding parklands. These paid positions are designed for students considering a career in the environmental education/naturalist park profession while supplementing their current coursework in natural science and/or cultural history. In addition to gaining natural and cultural history information relating to parks, students will develop interpretive skills in this naturalist career training position.

Essential Functions

Performs para-professional naturalist duties such as assisting naturalists and staff with programs, performing programs (snake talks, puppet shows, mine tours, history talks, etc.), or labeling and light horticulture tasks. Performs public information duties such as greeting the public, answering the phone, stocking brochures, and otherwise assisting the public while they are in the visitor center. Maintains bulletin boards and displays, assists with accession program, assists with research. Additionally, may perform such other minor duties as are needed at the Centers such as run errands, perform minor custodial duties, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Interpretive Student Aide II: Completion of 3 semester units of college level natural science, cultural history, or other academic course work compatible with placement.
  • Interpretive Student Aide I: Equivalent to the completion of the tenth grade, 16 years of age or older.
  • Both I and II:
    • Must be in current student status.
    • Must possess a valid California Driver's License.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of natural science/cultural history, ability to impart such knowledge to visitors and users, ability to perform receptionist duties effectively and harmoniously, and to perform basic clerical duties.

Job Salary
Interpretive Student Aide I $10.37/hr - $10.69/hr
Interpretive Student Aide II $12.06/hr - $13.42/hr

After one calendar year, (no less than 800 hours worked) if job performance has progressed, the Aide is awarded a salary step increase.

Working Conditions

The Interpretive Student Aide position is a 2-4 year training program. Aides must maintain student status during the entire period of the training program. The Aide generally works part-time during the school year and may work full-time during summer up to a maximum of 40 hours a week. Interpretive Student Aides will be limited to working 900 hours between July 1 through June 30, each year. However, for the specific schedule of each park, see the Work Location Preference Form. Aides are required to wear uniforms and work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.

Work Location

Those applications meeting minimum qualifications will be retained for one year and will be used to fill any vacancies that occur during the year in 2009.  Interpretive Student Aides work at the following 9 of our Park Interpretive Centers: Tilden Nature Area and the Botanic Gardens in Berkeley; Coyote Hills and Ardenwood Historic Farm in Fremont; Crab Cove, Robert Crown Beach in Alameda; Black Diamond Mines in Antioch; Del Valle in Livermore; Garin Regional Park in Hayward; and Sunol Regional Wilderness in Sunol.

Selection/Notification Process

Those applications meeting minimum qualifications will be retained for one year and sent to parks as vacancies occur. Applications are sent to parks based on indicated preferences on the Work Location Preference Form.
