The Park District acquired the 1,476-acre Tyler Ranch property in 2009. In 2012, the Park District Board of Directors adopted the Pleasanton Ridge Land Use Plan, which identified Tyler Ranch as the site of a new staging area to provide pedestrian, equestrian, and bicycle access into the southern end of Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park.

In 2012, the Park District also acquired the adjacent 1,368-acre Robertson Ranch property, offering panoramic views from the approximately 2,150 feet rise to the Sunol Peak. In September 2022, through the process of a Land Use Plan Checklist Amendment, the Robertson Ranch property and the existing ranch roads will now be opened alongside the Tyler Ranch Staging Area.

From the Tyler Ranch Staging Area, park visitors will be able to access the Tyler Ranch Trail, the Sunol Ridge Trail, and trails within the Robertson property, adding 2,844 acres and approximately 18 miles of trails to the Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park.

The staging area will include 70 parking spaces on a gravel lot, 4 ADA spaces, and 3 horse, trailer, or bus parking. Restrooms and site furnishings such as drinking fountain, bike rack, and informational panel will be included. A small family picnic area will also be included. The project also includes landscape screening for adjacent residences, security lighting, and on-site stormwater runoff collection.

Construction of the Tyler Ranch Staging Area and trail began in September 2021. The Tyler Ranch Staging Area and Sunol Ridge Trail are now open to the public. Details for an opening dedication event will be announced once they have been determined.
